Maundy Money

Few traditions in English coinage are as ancient or as quietly extraordinary as Maundy money. Issued by the British monarch every year on Maundy Thursday – the day before Good Friday – these small silver coins are distributed in a ceremony that traces its origins to the medieval practice of royal almsgiving, itself rooted in the commandment Christ gave his disciples at the Last Supper: to love and serve one another.

The coins themselves are struck in sets of four: one penny, two pence, three pence, and four pence. They are legal tender, but no one spends them. Minted in sterling silver to a standard unchanged since the seventeenth century, they are among the most consistently beautiful small coins produced by the Royal Mint, their designs preserving an archaic elegance long abandoned by ordinary circulation coinage.

The number of recipients each year equals twice the sovereign’s age – so in the year a monarch turns seventy, one hundred and forty carefully selected individuals, typically elderly men and women recognized for service to their communities, each receive a set. The coins are presented in two small leather purses, one red and one white, the colors carrying their own ceremonial meaning.

What makes Maundy money particularly compelling for collectors is its unbroken continuity. Sets exist for every year of every reign back to Charles II, and the coins offer a remarkably intimate record of the aging of successive monarchs, whose portraits change subtly with each passing year. Rare dates, short reigns, and low-mintage years from the nineteenth century can command substantial prices, while modern sets remain accessible and form a natural starting point for anyone drawn to the living traditions of British royal coinage.
